Located in Wellesley, MA, Babson College was in need of a new first year dormitory and classrooms. The four story building (75,000 sq. ft.) included 107 double occupancy bedrooms, 2 classrooms, 1 FME Amphitheatre, 1 FME workshop, a Resident Student apartment, several lounge areas, a full kitchen and a laundry room.
Florence Electric and Kaydon IT put in 18,000 man hours to install power, lighting and control systems, FA system, heat trace system, lighting protection, bi-directional antenna for fire safety, emergency lighting via inverters, security system, as well as a Tel/data and a photovoltaic solar system.
Subcontractors worked together with the highest levels of coordination from design to final installation to ensure that all the mechanical systems fit properly in the limited ceiling space.
Fortunately, our team had the resources to increase the manpower to over 30 tradesmen for the last few months to make up for weather delays. Coordination by the General Contractor, Cutler Associates, was critical during the final weeks of the project in order to meet the deadline necessary for the College to obtain its certificate of occupancy and to have the new students move in.
In addition, Kaydon Integrated Technologies performed extensive restructuring of the College’s underground outside plant telecommunications infrastructure. This included 4,000 pairs of copper wires and many fiber-optic cables for data, cable TV, security surveillance and fire alarm.
